Australia: Melbourne reporters were left scrambling today trying understand what was occurring. The incident comes less than a week after a car was driven into about 30 pedestrians, killing five, in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD – the Bourke Street Mall.
Following ongoing issues within Victoria’s corrections facilities, this latest riot is alleged to lead to a number of vehicles fleeing at high speed and at least one collision with a civilian car.
The latest statement by Police is:
Police are working to secure a correctional facility in Malmsbury after a riot this afternoon.
Police were initially called after a disturbance involving around 30 inmates at around 2.45pm.
It is believed that around 15 inmates escaped the facility and six of those were arrested shortly after.
A further two were arrested a short time ago in the vicinity of Malmsbury.
There are seven inmates still outstanding. It is believed they are travelling in three separate vehicles including a red hatch (registration 1HZ5UN), white Suzuki SUV (personalised registration WILMAK) and a blue falcon sedan (ZVK598).
Members of the community are asked to call Triple Zero (000) if they see either of these vehicles.
