NZ Police today released more details about a horrific collision in Huntly on New Zealand’s North Island. A rental car carrying five people, reported to be an Australian family from Brisbane, is said to have veered into the path of an oncoming truck.
Waikato Police confirmed that a 12-year-old boy, a 14-year-old boy, and a 54-year-old man died at the scene. A woman and a young girl were also in the car. The woman is in a serious condition and the young girl is stable in hospital.
Inspector Freda Grace, Road Policing Manager for Waikato District, says this crash is yet another reminder to drive safely:
- “This means driving within the speed limits and to the conditions.
- “Drivers must be fit for the road, which means being well-rested and focussed.
- “Too often, a moment of fatigue or distraction has tragic consequences.
The Inspector said that while the investigation into the cause of the crash continues, “our thoughts are with the family and friends of all those involved.”
