The largest US wildfires still listed as active this fire season include two wildfires, one in Idaho and the other in Washington State. Both have consumed over 175,000 acres.

1. Pioneer Fire Boise National Forest, Idaho, 188,398 acres
2. Range 12 Fire, Washington State: Southeast, 176,600 acres
3. Soberanes Fire, Los Padres National Forest, California, 109,603 acres
4. Henrys Creek Fire, Idaho, 52,972 acres
5. Cedar Fire, Fort Apache Agency, Arizona, 45,977 acres

Although cooler weather is being experienced in some parts of the United States, large fires take a considerable amount of time to physically contain and blackout. 

As winds pick up, any hot spots may flare up, emitting embers into the the air. Often it may take months for full containment and extinguishment as fire can even move underground in peat and other materials before reappearing as flames above ground.
